litany of wholeheartedness

14 Apr

I wrote a Litany of Wholeheartedness to use in the service at church tomorrow.  I am pretty proud of it and excited to share. It is based on the work of Brene Brown and inspired by Rev. Rob Eller Isaac’s “Litany of Atonement”.

A Litany of Wholeheartedness, by the Rev. Dawn Cooley

Because there have been times when shame has crushed our ability to be wholehearted

We let go of who we ought to be and embrace who we are.

Because we have not always had the courage to be imperfect

We let go of who we ought to be and embrace who we are.

Because we have struggled to have compassion for ourselves or others

We let go of who we ought to be and embrace who we are.

Because we have been afraid of our own vulnerability

We let go of who we ought to be and embrace who we are.

Because we are sometimes too scared to live authentically

We let go of who we ought to be and embrace who we are.

Because we want to be whole-hearted people, confident in our worthiness and our belonging

We let go of who we ought to be and embrace who we are.

This is lovely. I had the great of meeting Brene recently and it is pleasure to see her words interpreted in this manner. Good work 🙂

Thank you for writing this and sharing it.

I will be using it as a responsive reading at the end of my service “Depression’s Silver Lining: positive things that have come out of my decades-long struggle with depression.”

One of the positive things is the self-knowledge I have gained through hundreds of hours of individual & group therapy, which included reading & discussing concepts from Brené Brown’s books.

By the way, your link above is broken. The correct link is brenebrown.com (no www at the front).

Thanks! I think I’ve fixed the link.
